I went to my 'documents', then 'downloads' section to delete files and could only open those files with a picture, such as pictures my brother sent, video etc--many files have the Internet Explorer logo on the cover, when I click to open them the screen attempts to open then closes quickly..then it starts trying to open more, like a domino effect--my only option at this point is to restart the computer. A few times I had to simply hit the power button and not go thru the normal shutdown procedures. I can access the internet no problem, it's just in this one section where I am at a loss as to what to do.

Not sure how.How would I go about that? Sorry for my inability. I am dealing with a dying mother as well. Girlfriend dumped me last week, mom is dying of Alzheimers and my computer is doing this.

    Look under Accessories/System Tools/System Restore
Select a date before the problem started.

Did you try to open that in a different browser? Anyway, If the Hughv's answer didn't work, what about moving this thread to the "WEB AND EMAIL" section? There are lots of experienced people with Browser related issues with the knowledge of HJT logs. If you are interested, click on the report button in your post and ask an admin or a mod to move this for you.

System restore is useless in this case

SR is designed NOT to do anything in the users documents folder
    It ignores anything in there

follow advice here and post the logs those programs make here in your next reply so we can get an idea what might be wrong & decide next steps from there
