I'm helping my mom update her computer, a 4 year old HP ZE4547 WM laptop running XP Home Edition, 1 gb memory (upgraded from 520 mb). Her internet had been working ok, just really really slow. My computer works fine on the same DSL and wireless network, so it wasn't a connection or modem problem. She was using an old wireless-b card and I swapped in an extra wireless-g/n card I have (router is wireless-g), so it's not her card.

She hadn't updated her computer in years, so I put on SP 2 and all the recommended updates, and then it barely connected to the internet in normal mode at all. I then loaded XP Professional with internet support from safe mode, so I think Windows is fine. But now I run into Error Number 0x8007043C whenever I try to go to the Windows Update site to verify.

I did diagnostics with her ISP, and they think she's got spyware or a virus because in safe mode the internet works fine, much faster than even before I updated her Windows. I then ran Spybot Search and Destroy, and it picked up 76 problems that I let it fix. I then rescanned and it came up clear.

But now I still can't get her internet to connect in normal mode. It connects after I do a ipconfig /release and ipconfig /renew, but is still really really slow, if it connects at all, and then disconnects after maybe 30 seconds.

Below are the Hijack This logs from Safe Mode and Normal Mode.

I'm out of ideas! Thanks for any help please!

Basically, I ran combo fix and got rid of wcvs.exe.
I used winsockfix.exe and seemed to have gotten me back into Windows Update.
I followed some instructions from bleepingcomputers to get rid of 4 files and services:

    wumss.exe
    wnss.exe
    wgareg.exe
    csml.exe

From safe mode, I went to stoped the services, then went to cmd and used "SC delete" on the file names. Msconfig and diabled the services on start up.

I had to go back and forth a few times to make sure I got rid of everything, but I think I did.

Thanks to all past posters for this forum and others like it. Please let me know if I missed anything.
