For quite a few weeks, my internet has been loading pages very slowly. There is no problem with the download speed, but each page it goes to takes long to load and this has never happened before. Doing a speed test on speedtest.com showed no problem with the internet speed. Resetting my modem, scanning viruses on my laptop, flushing dns, using registry fixers and switching off my firewall didn't help. I've tested the internet using other laptops and it was normal, so I'm sure the problem is with my laptop.

A week before this happened, my laptop was attacked by a malware "xp antivirus pro 2013", but I solved it with the registry fixing software and Malwarebytes. After fixing the virus, I realised that my bluetooth rfcomm driver, and dvd/cd-rom drive driver, microsoft kernel audio splitter and mixer drivers, apple usb driver had some problems, which were auto-fixed subsequently other than the bluetooth rfcomm driver. I currently still currently encounter the problem of being unable to sync my ipod nano with my itunes. After the incident, I cannot open my firewall settings, which I also solved. I'm not sure if the virus or the solution messed the registry or anything because this internet problem only occurred a week after that saga.

I cannot do a system recovery because the earliest possible backdate is after this problem occurred. I cannot reformat my laptop because I don't have the Windows installation CD. So does anyone have a clue to my problem? One that as much as possible doesn't need to reinstall the whole system.

i would suggest the virus may still be a problem, although a week later possibly not - try the below first and if still no improvement - have a read here
    http://forums.techguy.org/virus-other-malware-removal/943214-everyone-must-read-before-posting.html
and post the required logs and we can move to the virus/malware forum, although it can take upto 48 hours for a reply

you may have a recovery partition on the PC and able to make the recovery DVDs - which I would do , and then you can always set back to factory condition

a few things to try (although you may have already done most)

    1) Download and install the adapter driver - NOT just an update - but actually install
    2)
    ------------------------------------------------------------------------

Uninstall and allow windows to re-install the adapter and Driver
goto the device manager > Network Adapters > click on the [+] to show all the adapters

right click on the adapter and from the menu

    remove/uninstall the adapter

Now restart the pc and allow windows to detect new hardware and re install the adapter and the driver
    ------------------------------------------------------------------------

    3) TCP/IP reset - you dont say which windows version you have
    ------------------------------------------------------------------------

TCP/IP stack repair options for use with Vista/Windows 7

Start> Programs> Accessories> and right click on Command Prompt, select "Run as Administrator" to open a command prompt box
(A new dialogue box - black with white font, will appear on the screen ):

In the command prompt window that opens, type the following commands:

Note: Type only the text in bold and red for the following commands.

Reset WINSOCK entries to installation defaults: netsh winsock reset catalog and press enter

Reset IPv4 TCP/IP stack to installation defaults. netsh int ipv4 reset reset.log and press enter

Reset IPv6 TCP/IP stack to installation defaults. netsh int ipv6 reset reset.log and press enter

    ReStart (reboot) the machine.

    If you receive the message
    The requested operation requires elevation.
Then please open the command prompt as administrator - as requested above
Start> Programs> Accessories> and right click on Command Prompt, select "Run as Administrator" to open a command prompt box
(A new dialogue box - black with white font, will appear on screen ):

Please note and post back - if you receive the following message :-
    Access is Denied

please post back the results in a reply here - its important we know that these commands have worked correctly and not produced any errors
right click in the command prompt box
    select all
    enter
control key + C key - to copy
    then reply here and
control key + V to paste

Thanks for the help. I've done the TCP/IP repair stack option and am going to restart my laptop. But here's what's said in cmd.

    Microsoft Windows XP [Version 5.1.2600]
    (C) Copyright 1985-2001 Microsoft Corp.

    C:\Documents and Settings\Zi Heng>netsh int ip reset reset.log

    C:\Documents and Settings\Zi Heng>netsh winsock reset catalog

    Sucessfully reset the Winsock Catalog.
You must restart the machine in order to complete the reset.

    C:\Documents and Settings\Zi Heng>

omg, being afraid of uninstalling the adapter and driver like you've suggested, i went to update the "intel(r) 82567lm gigabit network connection" driver and everything seemed to have went back to normal. not sure what's going on and hoping it's not shortlived, but i'll continue to monitor the situation. thanks so much for the help :)

sometimes update does not make many changes-but sounds like yours did work - so fingers crossed

just to ask, where do you download the adapter driver? i tried to find and install for "intel(r) 82567lm gigabit network connection" but the intel directory doesn't seem to have it. mine is an 86bit system and there seems to be only those catering to 32bit and 64bit. so if i needed to uninstall it, would i have to download that online first? or can i just unistall it, and on restart, the system will automatically search it, or is there anywhere in the system directory i have to click to find and install it?

it should have 32 or 64 bit software

so the x86 usually refers to the 32bit software - which the majority of XP system are (there was a 64bit version but rarely installed on home PCs)

Sorry to interrupt again, but after some observation, I realised that despite updating, uninstalling and installing the network drivers, the problem still persist, although not as bad as before (occassionally the loading speed goes faster). So I'm scanning the computer as suggested and here are the logs. I am, however, unable to scan with GMER because each time I try, I end up with blue screen of death before the scan completes. Not sure if without GMER is it still helpful, but here are what I have from HijackThis and DDS.
