I just found your site, and have attempted to solve my problem on my own, but have not been successful so I'm looking for your help. My computer tends to lock up when I am logged onto the internet. It will typically lock up for 5-10 seconds, then it un-freezes. When this happens the screen graphics get all messed up. More recently it freezes and will not start up again forcing me to re-boot. I am using Mozzila/Firefox browser, and AVG Free addition. I also have several other Ad/Blocker and Anti-virus and Malware protection programs. I am starting to think that is the problem that I have too many running at the same time? Do you think I need more RAM or is this

    What might you recommend ?

3072 MB(3 GB) of RAM is more than enough for Windows XP SP3. Your computer is using the 32-bit version, so increasing it to 4 GB or more would be useless anyway because it wouldn't be recognized and used.

If your computer has over-kill with security-related programs, and if it has too many programs auto-starting and running in the background, that can definitely slow and bog it down.

    ----------------------------------------------------------

Go here and click the green "Download latest version" link to download and save HiJackThis 2.0.4.

After it's been downloaded and saved, close all open windows first, then double-click the saved file to install it.

Allow it to install in its default location - C:\Program Files.

After it's been installed, start it and then click "Do a system scan and save a log file".

When the scan is finished in less than 30 seconds, a log file will appear.

    Save that log file.

Return here to your thread, then copy-and-paste the entire log file here.

    ----------------------------------------------------------

Start HiJackThis, but don't run a scan.

Click on the "Open The Misc Tools Section" button.

Click on the "Open Uninstall Manager" button.

Click on the "Save List" button.

    Save the "uninstall_list.txt" file somewhere.

    It'll then open in Notepad.

Return here to your thread, then copy-and-paste the entire file here.

Here is the support site for the ASUS A8N-SLI Premium motherboard in your computer.

You might want to add and save this site in your browser favorites/bookmarks list so you can refer to it if needed.

It supports a maximum of 4096 MB(4 GB) of RAM - a maximum of 1024 MB(1 GB) in each of its 4 slots.

    It supports these DDR modules:

    DDR PC2100(DDR266)

    DDR PC2700(DDR333)

    DDR PC3200(DDR400)

If you uncheck "Show Updates" in the Add Or Remove Programs window, you won't have all those updates and hotfixes to look at.

    Do NOT uninstall

    Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1

    Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Redistributable

Which programs in post #5 that I requested you to uninstall did you NOT uninstall?

Your HiJackThis scan log shows that you didn't uninstall them all.

E:\Program Files\CachemanXP\CachemanXP.exe..When I click on it to uninstall it comes up with an error message:
"Could not open INSTALL.LOG.file. I went into the E:drive to delete it there and sent it to the recycle box but it still shows up on the task bar like it is still running. (it seems to monitor the hard drive and ram usage.) All others I believe I deleted and updated the programs you listed. Not sure how to get rid of this Cacheman program.

Start HiJackThis, then click "Do a system scan only".

The scan is quick and should be finished in less than a minute.

After it's finished, put a checkmark in these log entries:

Click Start - Run, then type in MSCONFIG and then click OK - "Startup" tab.

Write down the names in the "Startup Item" column that have a checkmark.

If the entire name of any of them can't be seen, widen the column.

Submit those names here in a vertical list.

Make sure to spell them exactly as you see them there.
