Serious speed loss with cable !!!

    Hi,

I'm connected with cable modem supposedly with download speeds up to 3 Mbps. Since yesterday my download speed dropped to 230 kbps without any new install, any change on the system nothing but turning on my computer and awaiting for pages to download...

That's the second time it happens. The first time, a technician told me the only solution was to reformat my main hard disk. Which I did. It worked perfectly for approx. 2 months. And now it's happening again. The computer is protected by Norton AV 2004 and Norton Internet Security 2004. I maintain my computer with System Mechanic 4. Nothing works still glued @ ridiculous speeds for Korea (yeah High speed is kind of normal here)

I would really appreciate any kind of help avoiding another reformat/reinstall, etc...Thanks in advance

Pay you to stick with the one thead as it gets difficult for the people helping you. If no one replies as in your case give it a bump.

    Hi RicoRox
I was meaning rather than posting twice you would be better off replying to your own existing post.
If no one has responded within a reasonable time frame it is acceptable to Post Reply with the word bump in the message box. This takes your thread to the top of the list for a while giving it more attention. :)

Thanks a lot for that. As the thread is now on top, I'm not doing anything yet. Any clue on my pb by any chance as I see you are a Senior member ?

Thanks again for your nice replies anyway,

I don't have any experience with speed issues except for dialup connections so its best left to someone else. Senior member only means posted 100 times and does not relate to computer knowledge.

Ok, I tried. As nobody else seems to know. Thanks for the chat...

Hope will get something here as seems very serious unlike many other forums.

    Cheers

Are you on cable? If so try rebooting your cable modem unplug the power supply for a few minutes.

I have merged the two threads together rather than closing the other one as that post contained more information.

Please continue to reply to this thread until this problem is resolved.

    :) Hello Rico.

THIS might not apply to your situation but it is a good read non the less. You might want to check with your cable company.

    Good luck.

    Hi Kilowatt1,

Thanks for the link, but here in Korea there is no such limitations as almost everybody is cable connected (almost 70% of the population) and providers are highly competitive and very serious about speed issues (as for final users). I checked with the provider : no probs these days. The problem I'm mentioning is my home computer. We have the same provider in the office and the download speed turns between 850kbps and more than 1Mbps with four computers sharing the same connection ....And the office is located on the same main provider's line...

Basically it seems there is an issue with something within the registry which disappears when reformatting the disk (obvious). All tools used to detect spyware, etc and invalid keys within the registry did not solve the problem. The computer seems "clean" but the connection remains slow. I'm too illiterate in Registry issues to detect it. Maybe the problem hides elsewhere as well.

Thanks for helping me on that one as I start to despair....

    Cheers,

    RicoRox
