Internet will not open

I have a Fujitsu N series Lifebook laptop. Windows XP.
Has been working great. A few days back, it stopped letting me get on the internet.
I had an error from Avast: 10050 error.
When I try to get on the internet, it simply says Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage.
It seems to be computer related, as my daughters computer (the one I'm using now) will get on fine, as well as the i-pod.
Any ideas?

I opened the avast program and noticed on the current status screen that Real-time shields were off. Tried to turn back on but they won't. There is a button "fix now", but it does nothing. Somewehere in the process, I saw the 10050 error, but I don't remember where I was.

Run the Avast Uninstall Utility.

If no luck with the Internet,

Click Start > Run > type CMD

Click OK.

In the Command Prompt, type in the bold text, one command after the other, pressing Enter between each one of them:

Reset WINSOCK entries to installation defaults: netsh winsock reset catalog

Reset TCP/IP stack to installation defaults: netsh int ip reset reset.log

Restart the computer.

Try reinstalling the latest Avast or try another free antivirus like Microsoft Security Essentials or Avira Antivir.

Start, Run, CMD, OK to open a command prompt:
(For Vista or 7 type CMD in the Search box after Start)

Type the following command:

IPCONFIG /ALL

[Note that there is no space between the slash and ALL.]

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter.
Paste the results in a message here.

If necessary use a text file and removable media to copy the results to a computer with internet access.
