    Hey guys,

Names Chris, new to this forum in particular. Most likely won't post here too awful much, as i'm not big into computer(I can do troubleshooting, and put one together, but thats about it). Built this computer the summer before I went off to college, and I already totally forget the specs on it(tried dloading Everest Ultimate Trial Version, but the server may be busy because the pop-up window to download it didn't pop-up LOL). This computer has ran pretty much flawlessly for the past 2 years, minus a HD failure(was able to configure it to slave drive and recover all my data off of it thankfully), and when I try to shut down the computer, it just restarts. Probably some hardware problem, but it doesn't bother me too much to want to fix it.

Anyways, I figured I would run Hi-Jack This to see what you guys/gals thought about the processes currently running on my computer. If I should fix any of the items, or if I should turn off some start-up processes in MSCONFIG.

    So, here it be:

You will have to wait for one of our HJT log file experts to diagnose the log file and they will get back to you.

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system.
Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update.

    Updating Java:
    • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 5.0 Update 8.
    • Scroll down to where it says "The J2SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications".
    • Click the "Download" button to the right.
    • Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
    • The page will refresh.
    • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.
    • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
    • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
    • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
    • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
    • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
    • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
    • Then from your desktop double-click on the download to install the newest version.

There are way too many unnecessary programs loading during startup and running in the background. (n)

You can start out by disabling these startup entries from running in the background:

    QuickTime Task qttask.exe

    UpdReg Updreg.exe

    ATIPTA atiptaxx.exe

    TkBellExe realsched.exe

    SunJavaUpdateSched jusched.exe

    Share-to-Web Namespace Daemon hpgs2wnd.exe

    MSMSGS msmsgs.exe

    msnmsgr msnmsgr.exe

(Note: The above 2 startup entries have to do with Windows Messenger and MSN Messenger. Go into their tools/options/preferences settings and uncheck the commands that tell them to load and run. If you don't do this, they'll keep rechecking and enabling themselves in the startup list)

Adobe Gamma Loader Adobe Gamma Loader.exe

    Microsoft Office OSA9.EXE

Click Start - Run, type in MSCONFIG and then click OK - "Startup" tab. After you uncheck them, click Apply - OK - Restart. When the SCU window appears during restart, ignore its message. Check it and then click OK.

Please post a follow up HJT log when you have completed all of the suggested fixes.

Startup was definately just a bit quicker with all the stuff no loading(quicker than the 3.4 GHZ P4 comps. in my engineering computer labs here on campus). Hmm.... maybe once I get all of this done up right, I'll look into upgrading the performance of this thing more(gotta figure out what I put together when I built this though first LOL).

There are more startup entries that can be disabled from running in the background, but I'm going to let you make that decision because I don't know how you use your computer or what peripherals are connected to it.

If you go to this site and type in a startup entry and then click the "Search" button, it'll bring up the startup entry and tell you what it is.

    Microsoft Office

    MSMSGS

    KernelFaultCheck

    can definitely be disabled.
