You recieved an email telling you to do a System Restore? That doesn't sound right. Sounds like a scam. A little more info here would help a lot. In fact, a lot more info would help. Please take your time and explain your problem in as much detail as you can. This will ensure a response from the people here who volunteer their time to help. :)

In most cases the "backweb" issue is easily resolved by simply deleting the startup for it. It is not a required or even useful startup application.

If you want to know what to delete, post a HijackThis Scanlog. Unzip it to a permenant folder, run it and select Scan. Then save the Scanlog and copy/paste the results here.

You have a badly compromised system and I will move the thread to the Security forum for further follow-ups. In the mean time follow these instructions.

1 -- download and run the CoolWebShredder, CWShredder.exe from the site below. Hav it FIX problems and then reboot.

    http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/downloads.html

2 -- Check all these remaining entries in the HijackThis Scanlog, close all browser windows and select "fix checked". Then reboot.

Well the Scanlog looks a 1000 % better.

If you are still getting the backweb error, here's what I would do. Go to Start > Run msconfig and select the Startup tab.

Remove the check for this item:

    O4 - Global Startup: hp center.lnk = C:\Program Files\hp center\137903\Program\BackWeb-137903.exe

Alternately you could use HijackThis to delete it; it is not a required file.

    INfo:

    Program Name: hp center
    Executable Name: BACKWEB-137903.exe
Required: NO!! Virus, spyware, or resource hog
Comments: Based upon HP's own description from here - "With the My HP Center, consumers have access directly from the desktop to Internet sites featuring special offers for HP customers ranging from personal finance and shopping to digital imaging and music" I have classified this as adware.*The number may change - if yours is different let me know

    ref: http://www.lafn.org/webconnect/mentor/startup/PENINDEX.HTM

By the way I would also recommend dumping these items:

    O4 - Global Startup: Microsoft Find Fast.lnk = C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\FINDFAST.EXE
    O4 - Global Startup: Office Startup.lnk = C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\OSA.EXE
    O4 - Startup: Microsoft Greetings Reminders.lnk = C:\Program Files\Microsoft Home Publishing\MHPRMIND.EXE
    O4 - Startup: Microsoft Works Calendar Reminders.lnk = C:\Program Files\MSWorks\Calendar\WKCALREM.EXE

You can review those and others using the link I provided above and make your own startup choices. Msconfig is the best choice for disabling these as you can re-enable them easily if you change your mind.
