Invisible - Can't find Modem!

Using Sony 505VE laptop with an add-on USB Smart Modem because the original internal modem suddenly disappeared one day. I have tried all kinds of things to attempt to have Win 98 recognize the internal modem to no avail.

For example if I run MSinfo32 and display modems none appear. How can I get at the modem that is clearly still there but has become invisible?

Tried that first thing - shows nothing under modems...
