What is the command to get an ip addy from linux???

A small addendum:

Lynch is correct -- the ifconfig command will tell you your (current, local) IP address. However, you do not need to be logged in as root in order to execute this command (and there are good reasons for not being logged in as root) -- you need only to have its location in your PATH, or invoke it directly using a full pathname. For example, as a normal user, I type /sbin/ifconfig at the command line, and the command executes properly.
