im having a problem serving a webpage from iis. most likely this is a tcp/ip setting problem. when someone sends an http request to my ip ( like http://111.222.121.212/ ) they get a unresolved host message. and if anyone pings my ip address they get a request time out.

    y???

PS: i have a 4mb\2mb (in\out) adsl conn and a non-static ip, but i dont disconnect from the internet...

im using iis 5.1 and wxp pro

    help!!!

what's your IP? It's pretty hard to diagnose the problem without it :)

Your ISP might block incoming port 80 since you are on a dynamic IP and they dont want you hosting web servers. Try changing the server to a non-standard port to see if this is the problem

(notice i didnt tell you to drop IIS and use Apache ;) )

You PMed your IP, but I'm not sure that's correct, I "should" be able to ping you no matter what as most places don't block ping.

Go to http://www.whatismyip.com/ and PM me what it says it is.

I dont know how experienced you are so dont get offended, but do you have a firewall? How about WinXP built in firewall (you might not even know that its on)? Are you behind a router? Can you visit the website locally at http://localhost/ ? How about at at http://your.ip.address.here/ ?

I still can't ping you even with the new IP you gave me.

If you are running a firewall, turn it off, disconnect it, something and then see if it works.

    im not offended
everything i know about tech i have learnt my self so its bound to liable to corrections :)

firewall : yes - Norton Personal ; {doesnt block incoming http requests on any port)
winxp builtin firewall - disabled (two firewalls wud conflict)
no router, direct connection thru usb modem
    http://localhost/ works,
    http://ipnumber/ doesnt work

Ok, I ran a traceroute on your IP and it appears a computer at emirates.net.ae is not allowing me to get through to your machine.

    Is http://www.emirates.net.ae/ your ISP?

Because they appear to be the ones blocking incoming traffic to you
