After installing Irfanview to XP Pro I lost this functionality.

    Don't quite understand.
If you open Irfanview, click File, and click Thumbnails, what happens?

My fault, I wasn't referring to that feature (previously unknown to me before now).

The thumbnails I'm referring to are those in Windows folders like "My Pictures", etc.

Before installing Ifranview I could see previews - whereas now I only see I-view's generic icon.

    Thanks

    Go to Start, Run.
    Type: regsvr32 shimgvw.dll Press Enter
    Type: regsvr32 shmedia.dll Press Enter

If that doesn't work, run the file 'xp_thumbnail.exe' from http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm , Line 17, right side.

Just wondering what regsvr32 shimgvw.dll and regsvr32 shmedia.dll actually do.

It registers those two files in the registry. They are Windows files, responsible for thumbnail creation.

The other file, thumbnail.exe, resets a lot more registry entries. Download it first to your Desktop, and then doubleclick it.

    Did that work?

I've been too wussy to try. I'm a real novice and don't want to screw anything up. Please don't be offended, I'm sure it's perfectly safe.
