Hello! First post, so bear with me! Two questions:

    1) Is ADSL considered a WAN technology? I have been told that it's not, but I can't see how.

    2) What process takes place for a host using ADSL to get an IP address and other network configuration information. How do they actually get the IP when connecting?

Yes, my coursework is related to ADSL, but I'm curious myself why it is not considered a WAN technology. We've been told in class that it is not, but my lecturer didn't explain why. So I went to the Internet and couldn't find anything about it. Thought I'd ask here. Don't simply assume things withou asking first, dvk01.

I had the same suspicion, and you've confirmed it.

Your instructor talked about something and you had a question. So your response was to search the internet and post on a forum. Raising your hand and actually asking the instructor wasn't an option? Your instructor doesn't have office hours?

My lecturer's first language isn't English and at times it's rather difficult to understand him. Two people asked this question previously and he failed to clarify it enough for me. He's just said that it is not a WAN technology as WAN technologies primarily deal with switched networks. I wanted more information than this, so I came here.

I also have class during his office hours.

I would suggest that you speak to your educational establishment management and tell them that they are wasting their money on a lecturer who can't or won't explain things properly and that the students cannot understand

to answer the question, you first need to define what is a WAN and then What is ADSL & then you will clearly see why ADSL isn't a WAN technology
