I have had Avast free version for a long time and so far I guess I'm happy; it was recommended by someone very knowledgable (the guy who built my PC- 30 years' experience), and I haven't had any viruses.....but I wonder if it isn't worth it to have the "added protection," if that is indeed necessary.

    Any feedback appreciated.

I should add that I don't want to sound lazy, but I am really busy and would rather pay the $30 rather than have to use 3-4 different other free programs. I'd like it to be fairly automatic.

Didn't have any personal experience with Avast per se.
One thing I would note though is that no single AV or FW will keep ones PC 100% protected. As a malicious attacker will try different approaches to compromise a system, the same way complex measures are recommended to prevent that.

I personally use MSE, and am happy with it.
If you like the free Avast, stick with it, but I would suggest you also download WOT - this program will alert you of any suspicious sites and hopefully keep your comp clean.

    Hope this helps.:)
