These days, police said, the problem has moved into city neighborhoods like historic east Nashville. This area is filled with older homes that are getting a makeover. The thieves will go into crawl spaces, even tear apart an air conditioning unit, taking any copper they can find. "Their easy targets now are the homes being remodeled, the ones where you see construction workers in every day. You know they're putting in new central heating and cooling units and new piping in. They're basically waiting until the crews are gone and going in and ripping everything out,” said Anna Maria Williams with Metro Police.

“I panicked, and then I thought: 'Well, must have been somebody awful sick to come and steal from dead people,'” cemetery theft victim Sara Sweeney said.

The dialysis center had to transfer some patients because there was very little water flow.
“The value of copper pipe tends to fluctuate. Any time it goes up, we do see a rise in thefts,” said Police Office Matthew England.
Thieves can get close $2 a pound at recycling places like PSC Metals, formerly known as Steiner Lift.

 It has gotten so bad here that most cities have started requiring salvage yards and or recyclers to keep records of all transactions, including the identity of the sellers, just like pawn shops.

    Hi,
They have done that here in the UK for a while, we have a problem in some areas with thieves removing the cast iron manhole covers from the streets, which naturally is a serious safety problem.

A previous company I worked for used to produce copper and steel waste, the copper had to be locked securely in the factory.
But the steel waste in the skip outside often used to vanish, we reckon it was the gypsies as they would come in from time to time, to enquire about it. Funny thing was that with recycling being so popular the bottom had fallen out of the scrap market and we had to pay to have it taken away for quite a while.

    Rozy. :)
