Ok,I have got a bit of a problem with my pc,it won't come out of safe mode, also, when I try to write a web address in either IE,firefox or opera,I get the report illegal operation and the browser collapses.
There are a whole host of other problems like the welcome page coming up every time I switch on,it won't go away, and I can't change the screen settings,it won't apply.I cannot update windows, and the final one is the system clock loses time.
It was working sort of ok yesterday prior to a crash, and a fault being found with AVG,I ditched this and downloaded again, also in an attempt to fix some of the bugs,Iwrote over win98se again with the cd.Now it will work, sort of,but is in safe mode.
    I did run all security software and have done a hijack log,if it is any use,as follows;

Hi to get out of safe mode..try.
    Start>run>type.msconfig
Click on Advanced>remove check mark[tick] enable start up menu or boot menu.
    Apply>ok>reboot.
If no change..back into msconfig>click on Boot ini
Make sure safeboot is not ticked.
You will have to wait for a log expert to check your log.

Hi does it say safe mode in the four corners of the screen?
If not may need to up date video drivers
Check in Device Manager that the correct drivers are installed.
    Try restoring the registry.
    Tap f 8 at start-up>choose command prompt>type
    scanreg /restore [note space]
Choose date prior to problem..not the oldest.

Thankyou for your help,it was not safe mode, but looked like it,I tried what you suggested, and by hook of by crook,it is working now,of sorts. There are still a few problems, but at least it starts, loads and will get on-line,and stay there most of the time.
Whatever caused the initial fault,I got the report that AVG was damaged,shell32 was displaying 'change' whilst scanning, the new download displays' ok'.also outpost fire wall had to to be removed, and reloading causes other problems.A forum I use, reported an attempted hack and warned that there was a worm somewhere on the site,it makes me wonder,if this was the cause.Other programs I use seem to be damaged as a result of whatever it was.But thankyou.

Hi you have a lot running at start up 04 in your log.
All you need in Win 98 are.
    Scan registry.
    System tray.
    Anti virus.
    Firewall.
Start> run>type>msconfig>click on start up tab.
    Untick those not needed>apply>ok>reboot.
    D/load Spybot and Ad-Aware..links below.
D/load check for updates..scan..remove all that Ad-Aware finds.
All entries in Red in Spybot.
