Since getting my laptop, I have yet to get Java. I went to download stuff and it says I need Java plugin to be able to. Since I heard about the virus it causes, should I download it? or no?

Java 7 Update 13 was recently released and contains security-related fixes.

I use Java in all my computers and don't have any issues with it.

using java exposes you to higher degree of risk than is acceptable.
If you don't need java then don't install it

There are too many holes in java, even in the newest version, where the bad guys have already released exploits against it

If you never respond to adverts or emails and never surf the web then java is probably safe. If you surf the web, even on safe sites that have adverts then you can potentially be at risk. Plus there is the high risk of a supposedly safe site being hacked and using one of the java exploits to install malware.
