I just earned myself a smitfraud infection today and realised I couldn't download smitrem - the site would not work. Can anyone post an alternate download link?

I don't think the site is down, but your infection might be blocking it. Please post a HijackThis log and we'll find an alternate source if needed.
  • Run HijackThis and click Do a system scan and save a log file
  • Your HijackThis log will open in Notepad. Post the contents of the log here

You're right. I wound up using windows recovery instead - everything was backed up anyway. I think we really need some alternative to noahdfear - I've had to encounter smitfraud twice this past month and both times noahdfear was blocked. It's a huge roadblock to users to have it inaccessible.

All this has, however, gotten me very interested in spyware and antivirus security. Can anyone point me to some introductory texts on how spyware works?

There will NOT be any alternative sites for smitrem because it is updated daily and sometimes several times a day as new versions come out

If you have been attacked twice by it then it means that it wasn't cleaned fully the first time and you almost certainly don't have an uptodate antivirus and definitely haven't done all your windows updates as an fully updated computer will not be infected by this pest without a lot of user intervention

The security hole that allows it to install has been fixed (as far as we know) in the latest round of windows updates

It's true, the second infection was completely my fault. I put off installing windows updates out of pure laziness. Still, since recovering the machine, I've learned my lesson and am now running windows securely. Hopefully more people will get the message.

If only there was some sort of utillity that updated windows automatically! Hmmmm

there is automatic windows update and if you have XP sp2 installed it will turn it on for you automatically when you visit windows update, there is a button on teh right habd side of the page to press

Now if you think you still have smitfraud then if you still can't download smitrem please post a HJT log so we can see what else might be wrong
