I have an Hp pavillion 550 with windows xp professional and have installed Blackice on it and its networked to another pc with xp home edition. Lately when I turn both machines on my pro edition comes up with the following message on my blackice:
IP: 64.4.12.201
DNS: echo-v2.msgr.hotmail.com
I have elected to block intruder forever but it keeps poping up at every start up and also when I start outlook express.
As you all can tell I know nothing about setting up firewalls or what the messages means, so please have pitty on me and help me ou.
Thanks,
Tiradora.:( :(

Firstly, I'd just like to ask whether you disabled the built-in XP firewall when you installed BlackIce? If you run 2 firewalls simultaneously then conflicts caneasily occur.
I would read these opinions about BlackIce also since it seems to be problematic:

Maybe go for Zonelarm or Sygate (my personal fav)

It looks like you use hotmail as your email program and have it set to check for messages at start up, but you are attempting to block it using the firewall which seems pretty pointless if you want email messages

I did dis-able the XP firewall(not because I knew what I was doing) and as soon as I get a couple of minutes off I will read the thread you suggested Topkat.

dvk01, I agree with you it would be pretty pointless if you want email messages to block your own address, the problem is that I do not have an hotmail account.
If you guys and gals have more suggestions please post them I promised to read them all.

a google search suggests it is MSN messenger trying to log on
Ok to be on the safe side do this so we can check if something naughty is imitating a hotmail request

go to http://www.tomcoyote.org/hjt/ , and download 'Hijack This!'.
Unzip, doubleclick HijackThis.exe, and hit "Scan".

When the scan is finished, the "Scan" button will change into a "Save Log" button.
Press that, save the log somewhere, and please copy & paste its contents to the forum.

It will possibly show issues deserving our attention, but most of what it lists will be harmless or even required, so do NOT fix anything yet.
Someone here will be happy to help you analyze the results.
