Is this possible?

I'm not sure if this is a question to ask in this forum, but it can't hurt.

I have a friend who recently switched from digital cable to DishNetwork. She just got her bill and found $59.00 worth of porn rented on pay per view, none of which she rented. The dates that were on the bill were days that she was at work, 12 pm and so on. She tried reasoning with the customer service and they told her the only way the movies can be rented is by use of the remote control.. MY QUESTION IS, is it in any way possible for someone else to access her account or her signal or something, from the outside like a neighbor's house or someone using a laptop nearby, could someone access the signal and order these XXX movies and watch them on their laptop or tv across the street? She said she asked them if that was possible and they, naturally, said no, that she had to pay. $59.00 of porn is an awful lot for someone who wasnt even home to order them.

She didn't order them, and she is positive no one could have gone in her house, no one has a key or anything. The only explanation is either the technician that came out to install it did something, or what I said before about a laptop or neighbor across the street.

I know its not really related to computers and such but still, its something like that... right?

Thanks,
Renee

Does she access her DishNetwork account online? I know this is possible with DirecTV...you can order services via the internet.

Is her house separate from any other houses? Also, if she was at work, and can prove it, then she should absolutely not have to pay the bill, and should check into the legal end of them making her do so before she does.

She has probably 1.5 acres of land, give or take. She is on the corner of a busy street, and there are five 3 family houses on all sides of her. While trying to reason with the customer service on the phone, she did threaten them she would take them to court, but they beat around the bush some and then tried to make some deal like they'd reverse 1/2 of the charges, but the rest she would have to pay, so now she owes like 30 bucks, and I'm sure she will continue to threaten them to court, and they will probably credit her or something and drop the charges from her account, but she just wants to know if it is possible, or if a technician could have done it while installing somehow.

Thanks

There's several possibilities. If her house isn't close to another house, then it's unlikely someone physically tapped into her signal unless they are going onto her property when she isn't home and doing it.

Perhaps you could post on a DishNetwork forum and ask members about similiar complaints. The forums at DBS (try googling that) are pretty good...

What are the other possibilities?

I suppose someone could be going into her house while she's at work...especially if it's in a remote location.

She could always program in a 'code' to restrict any pay access, and keep the code to herself....but if someone's breaking into her house, that's the least of her problems.

Other possibilities would include as Showme said, someone breaking in and using it. Or perhaps someone wish permission to go inside but I think you already covered that. Also it may be possible to somehow hijack or spoof the Dish, but I don't know how exactly or even if that could be done. Maybe it's possible if someone aquired her information that they could even be doing it from a great distance away.
