Although AOL is my ISP, can I use IE or Netscape to sign in instead? If so, how? AOL's browser is a resource hog. My system resources drop by over 20% when I lauch AOL.

yes you sure can. You can use any browser you wish.
Go to Microsoft or to Netscape & get one of them... there are a couple others too...MSN & opera... etc...

    Just go download it

If using AOL, you will have to sign open and sign on with your AOL browser. Then you minimize it and open whatever other browser you wish to run.

    just to clarify a little

    open aol
sign on, do not open the aol browser
    minimize aol

start netscape, which will then use your aol connection to access the internet
