It is now safe to turn off your computer

    Every time I select 'Shutdown' the PC starts shuting down and then gives me this message,...'It is now safe to turn off your computer',...but I have to hold down the power button to force it to shut down.I use to know how to fix this but I forgot.lol.Windows 98S.E on Compaq....Thank you.

    If I recall, there's a setting in the BIOS that needs to be changed for the power management function.

    I think its in control panel - power options - ACPI or something like that

    When I was using Windows 98SE and Windows ME, I had the power scheme(in Power Options in the Control Panel) set to "Always On" and everything else set to "Never".

    I can't remember if those settings prevented the "It is now safe to turn off your computer" message from appearing.

    Yeah, but there is another tab for ACPI or something like that - Suffering from CRS but haven't been in 98 in eons

    Up until last year, I had Windows 98SE and Windows ME installed so I could deal with these forum questions, but I finally broke down and installed Windows XP in all of my computers.

    I don't care how much some people blast Windows XP. It beats Windows 98SE and Windows ME hands down.
