I am on an administrator account... Windows XP Professional. I have JRE 5.0 update 8 installed, yet when I try to go to websites that use it with either Mozilla Firefox 1.5.0.8 or with Internet Explorer, it tells me 'you need to install this plugin'...

OK so I click install, and it starts an install [JRE 5... update 6 or 7, different half the time] but then it tells me "You already have this installed". So I hit refresh, and it asks me to install it again... its driving me nuts... Please help!

    OK Update...

when I try to open the 'Java Plugin control panel' in control panel, I get this error:

    cannot find 'HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\JavaSoft\Java Runtime Environment\1.5.0_05'

so it appears maybe i'm missing a registry entry...

    can anyone help?
