Java VM troubles

I have windows XP and I cant play games online. It says I need Java VM. I realize that it did not come with XP, so I downloaded it from a link I found on this site. I installed it and it gave me a confirmation that it was installed. I then tried to play a game, and it still does not work. What should I do now?
