Hello. When I try to open something on a website like the CBS Insider videos or the like, it says in the status bar "javascript:eek:penWin[website address, etc...];" but nothing will open when I click it. I've tried disabling the Norton firewall just to see, but it still won't open. I've tried setting everything to minimum security, but still nothing. If I right click and choose "Open link in new window" I just get a page-cannot-be-displayed.

I assume there's just some setting somewhere that's clicked on or off, but I don't know where to look for it, and I don't know if this is a Windows problem which is why I'm in Other Software. Is there some way to find if I have a pop-up blocker I don't know about? Would a hijack log help, perhaps? I'm running XP Home.

Thanks :)

for java go here
http://www.bodo.com/javame.htm
look for two things
1) the following text displayed
YES!...IF YOU CAN READ THIS, YOU ARE JavaScript ENABLED!
2) black box with wiggling text

Have you attempted to click "enable" on the Custom Security levels?
- In IE, click TOOLS
- Click INTERNET OPTIONS
- Click SECURITY tab
- For both INTERNET and LOCAL INTRANET click CUSTOM LEVEL and look at your Java settings. Enable anything listed as Prompt or disable.

This set will show you your java status
https://www.clipstream.com/help/visitorhelp.shtml

With IE closed, Start, Run, REGSVR32 URLMON.DLL, OK. Then open IE, Tools, Internet Options, Programs, Reset Web Settings button.

Thank you, but it still isn't working. I tried everything you said and all the Java tests say I'm enabled. Nothing. Thanks anyway. :)

Oh yes, many many times. This isn't a new problem. I've had this computer for over a year, same thing the whole time. I thought if I installed enough updates and ran enough scans that the problem would eventually be corrected. It hasn't been, and it's starting to bother me.

Thanks again :)

whats your version of windows

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...F6-249C-4A72-BFCF-FC6AF26DC390&displaylang=en

http://home.wanadoo.nl/brugje/VM/#jvm

post a hjt log

HIJACK THIS:
Try not to reboot
Currently the Spyware identified by the security experts and especially the morphing and breeding .exe`s in the new variants of CWS, after every re-boot required by Ad-Aware and Spybot etc, just spawns more and more files for the poster to find and delete. This is making the advice the security experts give just too hard to follow.
One of the security experts recently had one log with over a hundred files, they guy had to format c: drive.

Download and copy hijackthis to its own folder , it makes backups so keeping them separate and available can be useful.

Note the Spyware tools websites are very often under attack and so I have provided more than 1 location to download from:

http://www.tomcoyote.org/hjt/
http://209.133.47.200/~merijn/downloads.html
http://www.thespykiller.co.uk/
http://www.majorgeeks.com/download3155.html
http://www.sherrylynn.us/privacypolicy (this has an older version 1.97 - if you can not get to any of the above sites)

Close all open windows and open Hijack This. Click “Scan”. When the scan is finished (it only takes a second), the scan button will change to “Save Log”.
Click on “Save Log” and then save it to NotePad.
Click on “Edit” – “Select all” – “copy” and then “paste” into the thread.
DO NOT FIX ANYTHING wait advice from one of the many security experts in this forum.

I currently do not have the skill/competence to advise and poor advice can be far more damaging to your PC with this software, and so I will be unable to add any advice on the log and so will nolonger be replying to your post with regards to the HJT issue, so please have patience and wait for one of the secruity experts to provide further detailed advice

i will however, be notified when you post the log

Thanks. I've installed this Script 5.6 for Windows XP, but it didn't help.

The installation check page at the second link says that I have "Microsoft Java VM build 5.0.3810 installed".

I'm running a quick Ad-Aware now so that my hijack log will be clear of the easy stuff. Thanks...

Run Hijack This again and put a check by these. Close ALL windows except HijackThis and click "Fix checked"

and i think your problem is you installed service pack 2 for xp(even though i have it and like it)

Thanks, I'll get rid of those things when I have some time, but I haven't installed Service Pack 2. I'm waiting to hear more about it first. This javascript thing is a problem I've had for more than a year. :)

Problem solved. I uninstalled Spybot and now javascript windows open just fine. I can watch CBS Insider videos and everything. I imagine there was some kind of setting I could've changed rather than uninstalling, but I couldn't find it.

Hello everyone,

I've been having the same problem with the javascript: openwin not willing to open. I'm running Windows XP professional and been following some of the earlier mentioned replies to the problem but none worked.

I have Norton systemworks 2005 and norton internet security 2005 and i've been browsing in their options and i found a script block with antivirus which i turned off first and then the antispam from norton security.

My problem was that I couldn't open the links in Hotmail emails but after turning off antispam and scriptblock.. it worked;)

Later i turned on scriptblock and it still worked so my problem was within antispam really. My advice is to check all options in ur firewall and virus protections programmes or spyware stuff.. i use Add-aware for myself but i didn't change anything to it.

Good luck everyone

Sharky
