    Hi all

I've just recently bought a Win7 Pro RETAIL; used from eBay. The seller has good feedback, and I chatted a fair amount with him through eBay messages. I have every reason to trust him, but in spite of that I would still like to check and be 100% sure that what I have is genuine and available for installation (not in use on another PC).

Does anyone have any tips as to how I can go about this? Can I go to MS direct to check (I seem to remember reading that I can't, but am not totally sure)? Any other ways...

Please note that for various reasons I won't bore you all with, I won't be able to actually use and install the OS for at least a couple of weeks....

    Many thanks :)

    Max

If the eBay link to that disc is still available, can you submit that link here so we can look at the disc image and its comments?

It really doesn't matter what it says on the eBay listing. There is absolutely no way to tell whether a SECOND HAND copy of windows 7 will pass validation or whether it is currently installed on another computer, until you actually install it & try to validate it

While the licence terms for a retail copy allow you to move the software to a different computer after removing it from the existing one. I am currently seeing quite a few that I will charitably call "mistaken sales" rather than out and out fraud or piracy.

Quite a number of sellers seem to wrongly think that after upgrading W7 to W10 ( from the free upgrade) they can then pass on or otherwise dispose of the W7 licence.

If you go HERE and then enter the 25-character product key for that disc and then click the "Verify" button, you should find out pretty quick if that's a legitimate Windows 7 "retail" product key.

Just jumping in here.So that link you gave flavallee,it's basically a FREE restore disc/usb/iso..etc as long as i have the key? does it matter whether the key is retail or factory?.Just curious as it would come in handy if by some chance my restore disc's fail, become scratched or corrupt.

Unless Microsoft has changed its policy since I last made use of that site, it will only accept a Windows 7 retail key and will not accept an OEM key.

At that download site to which Frank linked, as he said, you will find out if it is a legit retail license, but you cannot tell if it is still being used on another computer.

Yep. I'm just curious to see if that site accepts and rejects that eBay retail key.

    Thanks Cookiegal.
    - I think the first colourful sticker is for a different product, as mine (and other) Win7 CoAs look nothing like that.
    - My product key sticker is the yellow one. It is a little bit different, but mostly the same. The differences are that the vertical line is in a slightly different place, and the writing ("Proof of license...") is mostly on one line, with just the last word on line two. Whereas on he page you linked to there is a whole sentence on line two.
    - Holograms... There are slightly raised bits I can feel with my fingernail in the inner circle. And I can feel a slight edge round the outer surface with my fingernail, but more for the whole disc than the hologram. On the whole I'd say I don't think it is a sticker...
    - The two arrow holograms are there and line up perfectly.
    - The Microsoft <-> Genuine section took a little while to find but when I did it does indeed flip between the two words. Very clever!

Thanks to you also flavallee. Sure thing, here's the link:

    http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Windows-7...D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2557

Happy to upload any photos as well if that would help any?

In other news... I have tried putting in the license key here:

    https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows7

And I have also called MS and spoken to them about it/given them the license key. Both avenues confirm that it is a valid and genuine license. So that's good news.

The chap at MS was unable to tell me whether it is currently installed on another PC, as suspected.
Once it is (hopefully) confirmed that it is genuine, the next step will be making sure it is "available"/not in use or installed on another computer. And it would seem that is only possible by installing it... Correct?

What I don't get is this... If I install it and all is well and as it should be. But let's say the seller's PC which it was on still has it on but is not in use. If he were to then use the PC in, say, 6 months time, what would happen? That aspect of it really confuses me.

Thanks so much for the help.

Crikey - I didn't see all of those other responses! I just saw the first two when I made my response. So to everyone else - I wasn't ignoring you! I've got to dash for while now but will address the other responses when I return.

I've got the one in the picture.

    Cheers

To quote Richard Pryor in Brewster's Millions...: None of the Above! Those are all adverts. The actual listing should be below them. At least that's how it shows on my PC. The item I bought has the title "Windows 7 Pro English Retail Box 32-bit and 64-bit DVDs". The seller is kid-netic. Let me know if it isn't showing and I'll see what I can do.

    Sorry for any confusion!
