IE at the bottom there is a magnifying glass symbol and before I went there a lot, for note pad. etc and to find documentats. I just went there and the screen there is totally balc with no items on it and when I tried to search something got no results at all. What has gone wrong??

Using a third-party antivirus app is not advisable with Windows 10 because it can cause various issues, as you have already discovered.

You should stick with Windows 10's built-in antivirus app: Windows Security aka Windows Defender.

well why should a person HAVE to have the default antivirus. I did researched before this with varous videos with technical people reviewing the pros and cons of Windows defender and Avast etc etc, and Avast comes better over Widows defender. I had no similar probs with having Avast with XP. Why should downloading another antivirus cause any problem?? I am wanting to know how to fix this search problem

Windows XP and Windows 10 are 2 entirely different operating systems, so you can't expect both of them to work in the same way.

It was discovered soon after the birth of Windows 10 that using a third-party antivirus app with it can cause various issues.
Updates failing to install was one of the biggest issues with using a third-party antivirus app.

If you're insistent on using a third-party antivirus app, then you should be prepared to have issues with it.

Regarding the search issue, I would first uninstall Avast to see if that caused the issue. Once uninstalled, reboot the computer to be sure it's completely gone.

Then if the search issue persists I would run the registry fix in the link I provided or just wait until Microsoft issues an update to fix it.

That's what my post no. 3 refers to Frank. The thread starter then cross-posted to the other thread which makes matters more confusing.
