Does anyone have an external HD and what are you using it for (i.e..master HD, to transport docs, backup,.....)?

I use one for my computer at work to backup the main system drive. I do this once a week and then store the external drive at home for safe keeping.

So I take it, you put an OS on that external HD?

    BigTex,
You do not need an OS on the drive (internal or external) to be able to use it for storage. It needs to be formatted so that it is usable but that is all.
The only reason for an OS is to make the drive bootable and run buy itself.

I use Ghost to create an image of the main system drive "C Drive" and store the image on the external drive. I also store backups of important files to the same drive. I take the external drive home with me for safe keeping.
If the internal drive should fail all I will need to do is replace the hard drive and use the Ghost image file to restore the files and OS.
I keep the external drive at home as a added measure of protection. If something should happen to the computer at work (fire, storm, flood, thief,.......) I will have a copy of the files I'll need to keep my business running.
