I have a Windows 98 laptop and I have 2 problems with it:

    1. The keyboard will not respond. When I press a button, it makes a loud "beeping" noise and it will not work! I restarted it a few times and got the same effect each time. Also, sometimes, it loads the setup when I did not press the button and I press the escape and it does not do anything, because the buttons are not working! Is the keyboard shot and I need a new one, or what can I do to fix it, also....

    2. I bought an external 2.0 52*24*52 CD-RW drive yesterday and since I have Windows 98SE, I had to download the drivers, which I did, and I plugged everything in right, but my computer does not recognize the drive. I reinstalled the driver and it says that there is no driver that would support it. I really need that CD drive but nothing seems to be working now.....

If you need more info, please ask!

    Please help me!!!

    Thank you in advance

    Jonathan

The answer to the first question is simple: replace it. Keyboards can be bought fairly cheap. Prising keys off and manual cleaning really is tedius and not worth the trouble.

For the second, I'll move you to the hardware forum.

I don't consider myself a hardware guru, but if this is a USB drive, you have to ensure USB is enabled in the BIOS.

Watch the first data on the screen display as you startup, it should tell you what key to press to enter "setup" -- that's the BIOS

And if it is USB 2.0, as it probably is, Windows 98 First Edition, does not, I believe have native support for USB 2.0. I'm not sure what you can do about this on a laptop. On a desktop you can install an adapter in a pci slot.

But let's see what others have to say...

Also apologies on my first answer, it hadn't sunk in that this was a laptop keyboard. You won't have much choice there, I think, but to manually remove the keyboard caps and use a can of compressed air to blow out as much grit as possible.

You might have a gander at this:

If you have trouble getting to view the BIOS, let us know the laptop model.
