Hi, My PC (windows 10) is behaving very strangely.
Firstly it would not recognise wireless mouse, or laptop.
So I replaced batteries, tried them in various USB ports and no success.
They all worked when connected to my laptop.
So I took the wireless models out and plugged in old tech - non wireless keyboard and mouse.
On start-up it will recognise the old keyboard and allow me to get to Bios using the relevant key and work in there, but apparently nothing else.... when I exit BIOS, on start-up the PC goes to a generic screen saver but I cannot get off this screen to log in etc.. it seemingly will not recognise either the old mouse and old keyboard
I have unplugged the PC from the mains and left it for 15 minutes - on start-up it is the same.
In Bios I have cleared the BIOS set up menu and restored to factory settings. Nothing changed.
Is there anything else I could try in BIOS without having to reinstall windows? Obviously I cannot get to the start up menu to update drivers etc
I can follow basic instructions but my knowledge is limited.. Thankyou
Press the power on button to start and shut down the computer 3-4 times and the Windows Recovery Environment should come up to the troubleshooting options menu.
Thank-you so much for replying, it is hugely appreciated. The fear of losing a lot of material when a PC malfunctions (even if you are relatively careful about backing up etc) is a real one.
I have followed your instructions but sadly am unable to get the Windows Recovery environment.
On start up the PC gives a display which I have attached.
As you will see, it says I have 3 USB Devices (3 keyboards, 2 mice, 2 hubs). I do not know if this is relevant but of course all I have attached is one keyboard and one mouse attached in the same USBs they always have been.... and changing which USBs had no effect.
On start-up I get the BIOS window, then this, then the windows chime and the round 'loading' circle... then the typical windows screensaver but then nothing... I cannot progress and keyboard or mouse recognised... Thank-you once again for your assistance
OK, am in BIOS with the USB in a slot.
Just guessing but I go to boot where I get boot device priority / hard disk drives / boot settings config and security....
Now I am a little lost.. I thought maybe boot device priority.
Here I get 1st boost device {removable dev.} which sounds promising but.. " a device enclosed in paretheses has been disabled in the corresponding type menu.
But then again, I could be completely in the wrong area!
Processor
Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-6200U CPU @ 2.30GHz
Video Card
Intel(R) HD Graphics 520
RAM
8.0 GB
Operating System
Microsoft Windows 10 (build 16299), 64-bit
Please find attached boot images from desktop - have included a couple.. for system info the previous image should have that
ok, in a fit of pique, I opened the boot priority menu (as per pic in previous post) and changed order, saved changes on exit and rebooted with both the removable device and CD Rom at the top . Neither had any impact and I returned to the screen saver with no input possible.... if you are banging your head against the desk, my apologies.. I certainly am!
You should change it so the CD device is at the top. When you did this and booted it did not show a black screen that says hit any key to boot to disk? Also open the security menu in the bios and provide a picture.
Please provide the exact brand and model of your laptop?
No - the black screen did sadly not appear. It rebooted as before.
On start up it is saying "01 USB mass storage device found and configured" so I think the broken desktop PC is recognising the UBS stick is there, just not booting from it.
the pic of the security settings is attached.
The dell laptop I am communicating with you in is a Dell XPS 13 9350
Are you certain that is the correct model. I have two of these model of laptops and neither one of shows the bios anything like yours. That looks like a much older model. Please provide the service tag # from the label on the bottom of the laptop to confirm.
aha, got the windows to load from the USB by changing it to the first hard drive. but of course, it now wants a mouse to choose the various installation settings. This PC is going in the bin
I am speaking to you from the laptop. Which works fine as I have said before. The problem machine is my desktop which is a completely different make and model but I am unable to give you the details because it will not start!
done it, set up is starting... but of course I have to remove the installation media and restart the computer.... and then run set up.. lets see if it works
Did you recently perform any Windows 10 Updates. It looks like the following Updates are causing these issues.
KB4041676 OR KB4041691
