Ok, Here is the story. For the past 3 months I been running this computer every little thing I load or do takes 3-5 mintues to load, Whether it's winamp or Yahoo Instant Messenger It takes a really long time to load any app of any sort. There has been no changes made to my machine and I scanned for viruses on this machine and nothing is found. Could I get some help in why this is computer is a lag-a-holic? It's been a good machine until it's started to lag.

    My CPU specs:
    Windows XP Service pack 3
    1.8 GHZ Pentinum 4 Processor
    512 MB RDRAM, 4 128-mb sticks
    2 HDs 30GB,80GB
    256 MB ATI Radeon X156
    SoundBlaster Live 5.0

Like I said I never had any problem with my PC until recently, any help would be good.

Which AV program do you use? Symantec was causing my PC to run slow and never found any viruses, I removed it and my system is much faster and any indications of viruses are less than before. I have scanned from TrendMicro and not found any viruses in the 3 months since I removed Symantec.

Post a HijackThis log here so we can see what's running in the background. It's my guess that your computer has too many unnecessary programs running in the background - which most users are guilty of.

I was going to suggest adding another 512 MB of RAM, but your computer uses expensive RDRAM modules and wouldn't be a cost-effective performance upgrade for a 6 - 7 year old computer.

I am using AVG 8.0 Free edition. I appreciate all the suggestions. For online scanning I used "Trend housecall" and nothing was found. As for a new computer,it would be nice to have the money to do so since the economy here in michigan is extememly bad. Maybe in due time but for now this is all I got.

Click Start - Run, type in MSCONFIG and then click OK - "Startup" tab.

    Remove the checkmark from:

    UpdReg UpdReg.EXE

    http://www.sysinfo.org/startuplist.php?filter=UpdReg

    Jet Detection ADGJDet.exe

    http://www.sysinfo.org/startuplist.php?filter=Jet+Detection

    CTStartup CTEaxSpl.EXE

    http://www.sysinfo.org/startuplist.php?filter=CTStartup

    HP Software Update HPWuSchd2.exe

    http://www.sysinfo.org/startuplist.php?filter=HP+Software+Update

    NeroFilterCheck NeroCheck.exe

    http://www.sysinfo.org/startuplist.php?filter=NeroFilterCheck

    SunJavaUpdateSched jusched.exe

    http://www.sysinfo.org/startuplist.php?filter=SunJavaUpdateSched

    nwiz nwiz.exe

    http://www.sysinfo.org/startuplist.php?filter=nwiz

    StartCCC CLIStart.exe

    http://www.sysinfo.org/startuplist.php?filter=StartCCC

    BgMonitor NMBgMonitor.exe

    http://www.sysinfo.org/startuplist.php?filter=NMBgMonitor.exe

    VoipBuster VoipBuster.exe

    http://www.sysinfo.org/startuplist.php?filter=VoipBuster

    MSMSGS msmsgs.exe

    http://www.sysinfo.org/startuplist.php?filter=MSMSGS

Click Apply - OK, but don't restart just yet!

Click Start - Run, type in SERVICES.MSC and then click OK.

Expand the Services window so you can see the list clearly.

    Double-click on:

    Ati HotKey Poller

    ATI Smart

    Creative Service For CDROM Access

    NBService

    NMIndexingService

    StarWind AE Service

Change the setting from "Automatic" to "Manual", then click Apply. You have to do one at a time.

Close all windows, then restart your computer.

When the small SCU window appears on the desktop during restart, ignore the message. Place a checkmark in it, then click OK.

After you've done all of the above, run a new scan with HijackThis, then post that new log here.

    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Note: I posted a link to each of the startup entries so you can read about them and determine if you're in agreement with me about disabling them from running in the background.

Has the startup time improved, and is your computer running a little faster now?

Recheck the startup list. I see 4 entries that I advised you to disable which you didn't, unless you chose to keep them enabled for some reason.

I checked my "startup" tab,so I think I got those on. However mozilla took almost 7 mintues to load when I rebooted. Do you notice any other "problems"?

The startup list looks better now.

I'm not a HijackThis log expert, but nothing obviously suspicious in it jumps out at me.

I'm a die-hard Internet Explorer user and don't use Mozilla Firebox or any other browser, so I can't address your browser problems.

May I ask why you use I.E.? You're eventually going to hit with security problems because My friends computer just got owned thanks to I.E.,I suggest firefox after he had to re-install windows now happy. I'm no computer expert or anything but you should look into mozilla or maybe opera for security issues. Anyways thanks for you're help. while my PC doesn't work like it did, it's not lagging as much either, thank you!

I've been using Internet Explorer since version 3.02. I've tried Netscape and Opera and Mozilla as a secondary browser and didn't like them, so I stick with Internet Explorer.

Knock on wood, I haven't had a computer infected with a virus yet. I've been using computers for over 11 years and am very security-conscious and make use of the proper software and hardware. I regularly make online purchases and do online banking and have never had a problem with it.

Inexperience and careless computer habits is what gets users into trouble, no matter which browser they use.

Well spoken. I don't do any careless acts on my browser's either because it's those certain websites that get people into trouble. I used to use I.E. until I got trojans almost every other day, then I switched to mozillla then mozilla firefox my browsing is better now and it's more secure. So with your experience it's no wonder you use I.E., you know your "computer" and with that knowledge,it's all that matters.

I'm using Internet Explorer 8(currently in its second beta release) in 2 of my 3 desktops. One thing that I like about it is being able to have my browsing history automatically deleted when I close the window. (y)

If you read a lot of the threads in these forums, you'll notice that many users still have XP SP1 or XP SP2 or Internet Explorer 6 and haven't kept up-to-date with the critical security-related updates. And you wonder why they have a security breach of one type or another.
