Am running a Netgear wired router using a Netgear PCI network card GA311 on a desktop PC. It used to work fine but have not been using the desktop on line for several months (using it standalone for music recording etc. without connecting to the web at all). Needed to get online yesterday and found it just wont connect to the internet. It has always been protected with Webroot Spysweeper and Window Washer and Zone alarm comprehensive package (until April 2009 when I was last online).

The same router works perfectly wired to a Toshiba laptop and a Dell laptop (and both run happily concurrently). I am on the Toshiba now.

SO really puzzled about the desktop. Have switched off Windows Firewall, uninstalled anything which might be blocking access (zonealarm) and I will reinstall latest protection once its working again.

    Any suggestions please?

    thanks
    Jumbo

Try going into Control Panel, System, Hardware tab, Device Manager. (Location of device manager may be different depending on OS, but it will be under System). Find the network card under 'Network Adapters'. Does it look normal or is there an exclamation point or some other indicator that something is wrong? In any event, right click on it and select 'update drivers', first making sure you have the driver CD handy.Go through the steps to reinstall driver.

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD to open a command prompt:

In the command prompt window that opens, type type the following command:

Note that there is a space before the /ALL, but there is NOT a space after the / in the following command.

    IPCONFIG /ALL

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter to copy the contents to the clipboard.
Paste the results in a message here.

If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

[Note this was the original response: I have subsequently managed to get into the registry and change the IP Routing value to 1 (and then shows as enabled) but still no success with getting through onto the internet I am afraid.]

Probably should have suggested this sooner . You can get this thread transferred to the Networking Forum. Clicki on Report at the bottom of a post and ask that a moderator switch this thread to the Networking Forum. Get you better help than me and maybe a faster resolution of your problem.

    The IPCONFIG /ALL looks good.

Go into a command prompt and do the following and copy the results here.

    ping 192.168.0.1
    ping 192.168.0.2
    ping 74.125.45.100
    ping yahoo.com

sorry for the delay, my wife has been ill in hospital.

Yes that IPCONFIG was from the desktop which is not connecting.

The laptop is connecting beautifully, really quick (for UK!) speed downloading etc. (about 8 Meg)

    thanks

    Do the ping tests.
    Do you have a firewall?

Apologies again for the delay, continuing problems with my wife being ill.

Herewith all the tests taking via removable disc from the problem desktop. I have deactivated all firewall and other security software on the desktop. I had been running a full Zonealarm suite, also Webroot Spyweeper and Window Washer plus System Mechanic. Have run full scan for viruses, malware and cleanup with System Mechanic. Full works and no problems identified. But have deactivated until I have resolved the internet access.

Note: I have done the same tests from this laptop, which is accessing the internet, and I get almost identical results as for the desktop which is the results shown below.

    Thanks and happy Christmas

Hope your wife gets better soon.

Failure to ping yahoo.com shows a DNS resolution probelm.

When you get time. try a Winsock, TCP/IP stack repair.

Start, Run, CMD to open a command prompt:

In the command prompt window that opens, type type the following commands, each followed by the Enter key:

Note: Type only the text in bold for the following commands.

Reset TCP/IP stack to installation defaults, type: netsh int ip reset reset.log
Reset WINSOCK entries to installation defaults, type: netsh winsock reset catalog
    Reboot the machine.

Also run an IPCONFIG /ALL for your Toshiba and see what is listed for the DNS Servers.
