I have 2 HP Laptops running W7, not used much.
In each, If I leave the battery in, it is almost dead in a week.
If I take the battery out, it will be still be good ( Almost 100%) many weeks later.

Any suggestions on how I can avoid having to remove the battery each time ??

Power the laptop completely down|off when done. If you leave it one of the sleep|hibernate-type modes, it is still drawing a little power.

If I leave the battery in,
Is it plugged in too or is the plug removed? Is a USB device, like a mouse plugged in? It could be the USB port is hot, meaning it never goes to sleep and is drawing power constantly. Some laptops, I think, have an always on USB port.

I don't think I can test ours because we turn our two Win 7 laptops on daily. To not use one for 7 days would be a hardship!

Standard Laptop Battery ....
HP Pavilion g6 ... & ... HP 6570b

Hummmm ... That makes sense
each has a wireless mouse (USB) .... One has a mem card.
Think I'll pull the USBs and and the card then see if any difference.

I'll be back in a few days .... I think it's not the USB ...
I also have a wired usb optical mouse ... It turns off with the laptops.

If those batteries don't last long after 100% charge that could be why they discharge so quickly.

One battery is brand new. They only seem to discharge when attached to the turned off laptop.
I'll know more in a couple days.

Well that's not good. We can rule out USB always on port as the cause.

Let me see if I can discover why batteries run down in a turned off Windows 7 laptop.

Perhaps something here?
https://laptop.gemwon.com/blog/How-to-Fix-HP-Laptop-Battery-Drains-When-Off

Apparently some models, like the HP-dv6, are prone to this whether running Windows 7, 8.1 or 10.

Here is a 50 page thread started in 2016 about battery drain in various HP models.

I suspect you'll just have to keep removing the battery or keep the laptops plugged in. Your choice.

About 24 hours after using my new power button (shutdown -s)
Looks like this might be the answer.
