Ok I'm considering buying a toshiba laptop but reviews on the net that the cons were that it had a slow harddrive (Sata 5400 rpm) I talked to toshiba customer support and the guy told me that sata although slower in rpm actually out preforms a 7200 ide because of something about it can transfer data at higher rates is this true?

    Hi,
SATA bus can transfer 150 MBps (300 MBps in SATA II), while IDE a max of 100 MBps (Ultra ATA 5).

However not a single hard drive in the world can read data fast enough continuously to completely consume the bus bandwidth (an array of fast drives perhaps can - RAID), so the same drive on a IDE and SATA wouldn't differ a lot (maybe SATA would be a little faster due to more efficient data handling...).

However it is other factors like the drive's RPM and other design consideration affect how long the drive it takes to read sectors sequentially or randomly, so the 7200 RPM should be faster than the 5400 RPM SATA one.

    Hope that helps...

I'm deciding between A100-SK9 and P100-SD8 (canadian). both carry the same sata just graphics card and screen size is the main difference.

Laptop drives are a trade-off between power consumption and speed. Very few laptops sport 7200 RPM drives, since they're more power hungry. Many laptop drives spin at 4200 RPM for that very reason.

If you really need the ultimate in speed, you probably need a desktop machine. :)
