I have a Toshiba laptop that is about two years old, I got it from a friend who did not have any problems with it. I installed windows XP proffessional and office xp proffessional as well as norton antivirus, and windows updates. The computer just shuts itself down! It started doing it during downloads, or installing things, but then If inally got everything installed and now it just does it randomly, sometimes it will be ok for 3 hours, and then just shutdown, other times it shuts down every 5 minutes. I have changed the power settings to home/office and told it to never shut down, but it still does it. I know there is no virus, and it does not list an error message, it just turns black and shuts down. Can someone please tell me waht to do, I am computer illiterate and desperately need the computer for college, any help would be wonderful, thankyou!!!!!

Hi, and welcome to the TSG forum :) (y)

is it getting hot - can you see the temp in the bios or do you have software to monitor the temp.
perhaps its getting hot a shutting down
    OR
is it shutting down or restarting.
If its restarting then have a look at following - if not ignore rest of post
    goto
    control panel>
    system>
    advanced tab>
    startup and recovery - settings>
under the title - system failure
    untick - automatically restart

    http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;320299

now when it crashes - it willnot restart and the blue screen should stay on the screen
post the info on the screen
it will give the errorcodes and a filename, if caused by a driver.

    in the meantime
you may want to try running a memeory test
    http://www.memtest86.com/

you may also find some info in the event viewer
    control panel>
    admin tools>
    event viewer>

Yes that was the same laptop, it had been doing it and I thought that maybe I had fixed the problem, but I had not, so those programs are useless to me now anyway. It does not restart itself or have a blue screen or error message. It just shuts down and has to be turned back on manually. The fan does run off and on alot... but it does not feel hot. I cannot afford to go take it somewhere to get it checked out or go buy parts, but I have tons of work to do for college and I have got to fix it. Thankyou for anymore suggestions!

heres a link for shutting down issues on XP
    http://www.theeldergeek.com/shutdown_issues_in_xp.htm

anything in the event log at time of shutdown
have you cleaned any dust from the fan area and outlet area.
my latest laptop suffers from heat as if its put onto anything otherthan a solid surface - ie a soft furnished chair - magazines etc - it blocks the fan in the bottom of the laptop

ob: When you "installed" XP pro, did you do it as an upgrade, or as a clean install?

I have used a can of air and cleaned out the fans and stuff, and it is sitting on a hard desk. PRO was a clean install, the hardrive was cleaned and everything prior to installing it.

has it been on the web without any virus / firewall ???? protection
    it could be spyware/virus

    post a hjt log

    HIJACK THIS:

Download and copy hijackthis to its own folder , it makes backups so keeping them separate and available can be useful.

Note the Spyware tools websites are very often under attack and so I have provided more than 1 location to download from:

    http://www.tomcoyote.org/hjt/
    http://209.133.47.200/~merijn/downloads.html
    http://www.thespykiller.co.uk/
    http://www.majorgeeks.com/download3155.html
    http://aumha.org/downloads/hijackthis.exe
    http://www.thewhities.com/
http://www.sherrylynn.us/privacypolicy (this has an older version 1.97 - if you can not get to any of the above sites)

Close all open windows and open Hijack This. Click “Scan”. When the scan is finished (it only takes a second), the scan button will change to “Save Log”.
Click on “Save Log” and then save it to NotePad.
Click on “Edit” – “Select all” – “copy” and then “paste” into the thread.
DO NOT FIX ANYTHING wait advice from one of the many security experts in this forum.

I currently do not have the skill/competence to advise and poor advice can be far more damaging to your PC with this software, and so I will be unable to add any advice on the log and so will nolonger be replying to your post with regards to the HJT issue, so please have patience and wait for one of the secruity experts to provide further detailed advice

i will however, be notified when you post the log
