Laptop Loses Internet connection

I have a Compaq Presario Laptop with Win XP.
I have no problem acquiring an internet connection, but when I have not used the internet for maybe 3 mins or more and try to use the internet, I get a box that says-- You have no Internet Connection: Work OffLine OR Retry. Clicking on the retry connects me back to the internet immediately.
I would like to have the connection available for more time(5-10minutes) and I cannot find where to adjust the time parameters.
I would appreciate any suggestions on where to look to set this function.

I have no idea what "time parameters" or "this function" you're talking about.

Describing your ISP, network and what your use of the internet is may get you some suggestions and even a solution. Are there any other computers on your network and do they lose connection at the same time?
