in the morning i go to open the lid

It sounds like the backlight is dead.
On some models you need to replace the screen, not sure about yours. That can cost almost as much as a laptop.

If its < 1 year old, its a warranty issue?

Oh, and they put you on hold for quite a awhile so make sure you have time to call. Best time is during the day if you can.

well that's trouble
because i bought it from a small little store
and they had purchased it from somebody else
so there's that possibility that it was stolen

If the laptop was manufactured less then a year ago, it doesn't matter where you bought it. Check their site for warranty, it may even have more then a years warranty.

If the display is dim from boot-up and into windows and all the controls are as high as it can go then there's nothing you can do short of buying new parts. laptop parts aren't cheap.
