I have two questions: #1, I have a compaq N1000c. When I bootup there is a whinning sound that I believe may be coming from the fan. Is there a way to lubricate the fan? Or, do I have to replace the fan and is the cost worth the investment?

#2, my battery is dead. Where and what should I expect to spend for a new battery and is it a DIY job. Thanks Chuck.

You need to replace the fan, there is no way to "lubricate" them when they start making noise. I've attempted it many times, and it only lasts a month or two, and the problem is back. You'll likely have to find the exact replacment fan for the laptop, since many of them are pretty unique.

If the battery in question is the main battery, it'll cost you $75-100 for a replacement. As to the question of if it's worth it, that's for you to decide. :)
