I have an HP Pavilion zd7058cl laptop. The optical drive is a GCC-4241N (SO5DA)
Which I believe is made by LG. The HP part number is 344860-001. Since this
is a DVD-ROM/CD-RW, I would like to replace it with a DVD+/-RW. Are the optical drives in laptops designed to only fit a specific make and model or is there a way to install a product not offered by the laptop manufacture.

The drives themselves are usually fairly universal. It is usually only the casing and the facia that are different - and they are screwed on.
