    Hello All,
Have just joined and this is my first posting.

Have a Compaq Presario V2000, WIN XP HOME EDITION VERSION 2000 With SP2, Intel Pentium 4 1.7GHz with 224MB Ram and 60 GB hard drive (divided into 2).

    Problem:
Start up is fine but the moment you open any programme it takes a hell of a lot of time to run and within a minute or so of starting up there is a 'tick tick' noise from the machine.
However, if I open in Safe Mode - the computer works fine and there is no such weird noise.

Have tried all sorts of things - defrag, scandisk, pc pitstop check up (which was fine) etc no luck.

In Device Manager shows Yellow exclammn. mark at - Microsoft Tun Miniport Adapter #2. Have tried to uninstall it - no luck as message says cannot be uninstalled as maybe needed for booting.

Moreover cant even system restore - fails every time.

    Many thanks

Hope someone could throw some light.

    JC

If the sound was there is safe mode also I would think it could be a hardware problem but now i am curious if it is due to something else. You could run hijack this and see if anything shows up there for a log expert to look at

Click here to download HJTsetup.exe: http://www.thespykiller.co.uk/files/HJTSetup.exe
    Save HJTsetup.exe to your desktop.

Double click on the HJTsetup.exe icon on your desktop.
By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Hijack This.
Continue to click Next in the setup dialogue boxes until you get to the Select Addition Tasks dialogue.
Put a check by Create a desktop icon then click Next again.
Continue to follow the rest of the prompts from there.
At the final dialogue box click Finish and it will launch Hijack This.
Click on the Do a system scan and save a log file button. It will scan and then ask you to save the log.
Click Save to save the log file and then the log will open in notepad.
Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.
Come back here to this thread and Paste the log in your next reply.
DO NOT have Hijack This fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required

    Thanks.

No the laptop does not make that noise when started on safe mode - which makes me believe that it may not be a hardware problem.

Hope running Hijack this will not cause any new problems.

Hijack this will never cause problems as all you are doing is scanning the system and posting the log. The pros here will tell you what to do with what they see in the log.

I dont see internet explorer showing up in the usual spot?

anyway it appears you do have an infection. its your call but if you want to have this moved to the security forum you can do that by clicking on the red triangle and making that request

Sorry, my fault, was cutting and pasting and missed the IE line.

Rescanned once again and realised the fault now. The log file after HijackThis scanning should have read like this:

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system.
Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update.

    Updating Java:
    • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 5.0 Update 7.
    • Scroll down to where it says "The J2SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications".
    • Click the "Download" button to the right.
    • Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
    • The page will refresh.
    • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.
    • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
    • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
    • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
    • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
    • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
    • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
    • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-1_5_0_07-windowsi586-p.exe to install the newest version.

Now you need to address the tick tick tick problem.

That sounds like your hard drive is having problems.
    How old is it?
EDIT: Read the problem and see you have run check disk but have you gone to the mfg web site to see if they have diagnostics you can run?

    Just curious Cybertech,

I was thinking hard drive might be the tick source but would it make sense for the tick to go away in safe mode if it was hardware at fault?

Safe mode is not accessing as many points on the drive... just a thought.

Most HD failures I see are in the boot sector, but if it's bad it's bad. Sometimes reformat and reload will fix the boot sector but the drive will go as they all do.
