My laptop is running very hot at various times. It's not always at the end of the day and it doesn't always get hot. It sometimes gets so hot that it makes me sweat. My previous laptop, a Sony Vaio, did the same thing. I took it to a computer repair guy and he said that there was nothing he could do for it and advised me to go buy a new one. No, he doesn't sell computers. He's trustworthy!

I have cleaned it as best as I know how to by using canned air.

Should I bring it back in to the repair guy or is there something else I can do?

If you're using canned air from the outside, it may not be very effective. Google for the service manual for your make and model to see how easy it might be to gain access inside the case. If the fan is blocking up it could lead to disaster so it's well worth the effort of undoing a few screws to do the job properly.

What make and model number is it?

Is this something a novice can do?

How else does a novice ever stop being one, Grasshopper? :D I've fixed PCs for a living for ten years now but only changed my first laptop screen in February of this year. Since then I've changed 43 but I only work inside laptops for which I can download the proper manual. This link http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Repair/Installing-Gateway-MD2614u-Fan/3766/1 looks like it may possibly help.
