I have a laptop that will spontaneously shut itself off. This gets VERY annoying at times, and sometimes happens at the least convenient time (like now when I'm trying to do virus/spyware scans). Is there any way I can tell what is making it shut off? Any program out there that will log if it's software or hardware causing it? I know this is a long shot, but I figured I'd ask anyway.

Sometimes it will go days before it shuts off, other times it will only stay on for a few mins. It also seems to shut off if something I REALLY want done is being performed (like now, I'm trying to do a spybot scan, I've tried 4 times now, and it shuts off every time. Before that it shut off during an AdAware scan), so it may just be the evil leprechauns doing it... but I don't know.

it may well be temp that causing the problem and its overheating - try blowing out all the vents - using some compressed air - you can buy cans of compressed air

That's an idea... I may try that. However, I have been letting it sit now for a good 30 mins and it's fine. I felt around the laptop and didn't feel and hot air blowing out (even though the bottom is hot). So, maybe, possibly the fan is broken. The laptop is an HP ze5170, and I have tried opening it before (to fix my on/off button). However, despite my best efforts, I could not get it open (I did, however, successfully disable the monitor, battery, and I guess the fan). I would love to get this laptop working again. I currently have it set up as a "desktop" with an external monitor, keyboard, and mouse. And As I am typing this, it just shut off again, this time, however it lasted a bit longer than the previous scans. So I am going to leave it off for a bit and then try again.

On a side note. Does anyone know of a website that tells how to open laptops? Again, I have an HP ze5170. Pictures would be nice.

Well, I think I'm convinced that the problem is the fan. I have a desktop fan that I wasn't using, so I put it next to my laptop and turned it on high, and my laptop hasn't shut off since. I've done two Spybot scans and am well into an AdAware scan, and so far it seems all is well. Although now I just need to get into the laptop to see if the fan is actually broken or just blocked.

Yep...thought it was the fan........it may be you moved a wire to it and it just needs connecting........fingers crossed.
