Good Evening All,

So my Dell Latitude D510 has slowed to a crawl once again. The Task Manager shows Google Chrome has eight uses happening, yet only the one window's open. Then the Manager shows six svchost.exe running. Any help is very much appreciated.

Indeed it is. I should've provided more details, such as this is a problem that returns every three, four months. Since I've last written to this site, I removed a lot of programs and seemingly had the machine running at peak performance. Over both the Thanksgiving and Xmas holidays, I endured visits from family and some family members made some changes on my laptop without any other piece of information than "I went in and did some things to your laptop to make it run faster." I think the brother-in-law's heart was in the right place, but since his two visits and uninvited "technological tweaks from a professional" my laptop's performance has since become increasingly sluggish.

Earlier in the year, I'd also tried to improve the video and audio playback, because any video would grind to a halt after about 30 seconds; any audio would get choppy and unlistenable. For a brief, glorious while of about ten days, after working through some (technological) issues with Kevin, my laptop was running quite well and the audio/video playback was seamless.

Now, I'm back to Square None. The Task Manager shows some strange things going on. Google Chrome crashses repeatedly.

Finally, I'm very appreciative of all your TechGuy.org's terrific work. I'm a very vocal and supportive fan; and I've sent a lot of colleagues, students, friends, Facebook friends, and even family to your site.

If I'm working with a machine that should be put out of its misery, I can take it. If Ol' Yeller's hydrophobia requires me to get my father's shotgun, then so be it.

As was suggested in your post in the Malware Forum after a great deal of work was done to clean up your Pc - a re-install of Xp, would be your next best move.

Without the discs or any other relevant, is that a possibility? After a basic Google Search, I found some sites that had some instructions, but I wasn't sure if they're to be trusted. Any input would be appreciated.

Click Start button > run > type
cmd

A Command Prompt Window will open.
At the flashing >
Type
tasklist

Press Enter on the keyboard.
Let it load processes.

Then click on C:\ at the top left of the command window.
Edit - select all - edit - copy.
Paste the list in your next reply.
------
Run the above again
Type
tasklist/svc
Copy and paste that log file too.

I am not a Chrome user and have no idea how many Chrome processes should be running .
Do you have the Free version of Malwarebytes installed?

Post a Hjt log - to see what is running on your system.
Hijack this 2.04
  • Save HJTInstall.exe to your desktop.
  • Doubleclick on the HJTInstall.exe icon on your desktop.
  • By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis .
  • Click on Install.
  • It will create a HijackThis icon on the desktop.
  • Once installed, it will launch Hijackthis.
  • Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad.
  • Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.
  • Come back here to this thread and Paste the log in your next reply.
  • DO NOT use the AnalyseThis button, its findings are dangerous if misinterpreted.
  • DO NOT have Hijackthis fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

Also post the uninstall log from Hjt log
Start HiJackThis.
At the bottom right - Other Stuff
Click on Config > Misc Tools.
Click > Open Uninstall Manager.
Click > Save List.
Save the uninstall list file on your desktop.
It will then open in Notepad.
Click Edit > Select All > Edit > Copy-and-Paste the uninstall list in the reply box.

Logs look Ok - run Superantispyware and Malwarebytes - if you think others have been playing with your Pc.

Try another Browser - Opera - Maxthon - Firefox and see if that makes a difference.
------
Right click My Computer>Open
Right click - Local disk - should be C:
Click Properties.

Tools>Error checking.
Tick both boxes
Click start.
It will say it cannot scan, do you want it to scan at the next start up..
Click Yes - restart Pc.
------
Clean out Temp Files.
Open the Start Menu.
In the Start Search area.
Type.
Cleanmgr

Press Enter.
Check [tick] Temporary files Only.
Click on OK.
Then Click on Delete Files.
------
Right click My Computer > Properties > Automatic Updates.
Tick - Automatic [recommended]
Apply > Ok.

You can later - once all updates are installed - choose.
Tick - Notify me but don't automatically download or install them.

I was able to perform all the above with exception paid to

Clean out Temp Files.
Open the Start Menu.
In the Start Search area.
Type.
Cleanmgr

I got the error message that Windows Search isn't running. So I followed the direction, "Click Start Menu, All Programs, click on Windows Search" only to get the same error message.

Can I delete Temporary Files by Start/Run/type %Temp%/Select All/Delete?

So, the Automatic Updates are being installed, but there seems to be a hang-up somewhere. The CPU spikes to 100%, and the Automatic Updates window has been showing the same message for over ninety minutes (still on update 1 of 5). Is this usual?

I got the updates installed, downloaded Maxthon and tried it out. After a while (ten, fifteen minutes) things became sluggish and CPU spiked. Once I exited that browser, CPU dropped between 4 and 7%.

I ran MBAM and SASW. No files detected with the former, twelve with the later.

I managed to delete all the Temp Files.

Download Security Check by screen317
http://screen317.spywareinfoforum.org/
Save it to your Desktop.

Double click the install icon.
A command Prompt window will open.
Let it scan the Pc - press any key when asked.
It should now open in Notepad - and will save a log called checkup.txt.
Post the result of the scan here.
------
Run the online scan.
