laptop turns off

    I have a Dell Inspiron Inspiron 1300/B130 and it turns off automatically then i get a message unit got hot and turned itself off ,hit F1 and it goes back on... Does this mean the fan is not working?

    is there away to check this or fix it without it costing a fortune. I am retired ..

    I wouldn't keep testing it by turning it back on once it overheats. More than likely there is gunk (dust, hair, etc.) built up around the fans. Check on the bottom and sides, sometimes those get dust bunnies attached.

    Sometimes on the bottom there are fan vents. Check that first.

    I wouldn't recommend opening it up unless you have prior laptop experience. Putting them back together is harder. Usually the cpu fan is not that easy to get to.

    I had mine serviced a while back, I think it cost me $65.

    I'm not a great fan of Best Buy. Is it still under warranty?

    If not, and you do take it there, be sure to get a good estimate first.
