    Hi,

I have a problem using any external flash memory with my laptop. Hwnever I plug a USB stick or sd card in, I get a notification sound and then the computer says it needs formatting. If I try and format it fails every time. I have tried several usb drives and sd cards in all four ports with the same results. All of these devices work fine on other computers.

My laptop does still recognize and let me use my external usb hard drive however.

I have tried using Device manager to update and also uninstall both the Disk Drive and USB mass storage device, but this has not resolved the problem. The devices are listed in Device Manager, with no yellow error icon. It says the drivers are up to date.

I have also tried using CMD to clean and format the disk, but again the computer says it is unable to format the disk.

I have also tried the advice stated here - USB Driver Reset and USB Ports Power State Reset - Sysnative Forums

    http://api.viglink.com/api/click?format=go&key=935f66bc246cfba652317b8d41d3ef7f&loc=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.techsupportforum.com%2Fforums%2Ff217%2Flaptop-usb-flash-drives-sd-cards-not-working-recognized-but-need-to-format-then-u-705399.html%23post4172520&v=1&libId=bd7ab5c9-c7cf-42ee-9fbd-fda0a659b9ef&out=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.sysnative.com%2Fforums%2Fhardware-tutorials%2F3906-usb-driver-reset-usb-ports-power-state-reset.html&ref=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.techsupportforum.com%2Fforums%2Fnewreply.php%3Fdo%3Dnewreply%26noquote%3D1%26p%3D4172485&title=Laptop%20USB%20flash%20drives%2F%20sd%20cards%20not%20working%20-%20recognized%20but%20need%20to%20format%2C%20then%20u%20-%20Tech%20Support%20Forum&txt=USB%20Driver%20Reset%20and%20USB%20Ports%20Power%20State%20Reset%20-%20Sysnative%20Forums&jsonp=vglnk_jsonp_137763196233510

Could anyone help me to resolve this issue please?

    Many thanks.

normally caused by removing a usb device - without using the safely remove hardware
usb is hot pluggable but must usally be removed by using the aforementioned safely remove hardware
Download this it works on any usb device not just HP ones
    http://download.cnet.com/HP-USB-Disk-Storage-Format-Tool/3000-2094_4-10974082.html

then connect the device and open the HP format tool
CHECK YOU HAVE THE RIGHT DRIVE
    now format NTFS

then when the window appears telling you the capacity, close the HP tool
Safely remove the hardware the USB
connect again and see if it is now OK

    hi thanks for your reply.

all the devices work in other computers, so i do not want to format them as I dont think they are the problem.

Interestingly, in Disk management USB devcies I plug in show as RAW format drives, but when I plug them into other PCs they show as FAT32.

So the problem seems to be that my laptop is not recognising FAT32 devices, and instead sees them as RAW formats. If I convert a drive to NTFS however that works and there are no problems in using it. I can't do that for SD cards however, as they will not work in cameras etc. Any other ideas I could try?

    many thanks.

Bit defender total security since a couple of months ago. Before that, when the problem started was F Secure.

Please try that utility I sent you on my post 2 - format it NTFS, see if the SD card is recognised, then using the windows format eg right click the drive, format it FAT and see what happens please
