Possible hard drive failure. Is there a S.M.A.R.T. feature available in your BIOS?

From the Wiki:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/S.M.A.R.T.

...is a monitoring system for computer hard disk drives to detect and report on various indicators of reliability, in the hope of anticipating failures.

If there's an option to enable it in your BIOS, it may give you an indication of hardware failure upon your subsequent boot up.
