I am a beginner photographer who needs a laptop. I plan to travel with my camera, and would like a laptop to store my photos in. I have an SD memory card. I also have a budget of $950 and under. Any suggestions are appreciated. Please include a link if possible if suggesting a laptop.
    Thanks! :D

I am not sure what make or model laptop would be best but suggest you get a few of your favorite photos on a cd and when looking at different machines ask if you can run your cd so you can compare the quality of the different screens.
A good quality cd writer for making backups will be a must. A usb flash drive with a large capacity would also be handy.

Do you only want to store the pictures or do you want to edit them too? If you only want to store them, you can get approximately 12 1GB SD cards. And they would take up a lot less space in your suitcase.

Do you need to do the editing while traveling, or could you save the pictures on several SD cards and do the editing when you get back home? A $950 laptop may not be able to handle the best graphics software depending on what kind of editing you want to do. And of course you'll need to carry it around with you when you travel too.

You seem to be on a very tight word budget, so it is a little hard to recommend a specific laptop. If it is to be your main computer then you probably want to get a refurbished unit with some speed and a large screen. If you want it mostly for storing, sorting and maybe cropping your photos when you travel you want something compact. If your idea of editing is advanced editing with layers you need lots of RAM.

You might look at this if you want to do advanced editing and more serious computer work: http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=1162542&Sku=T24-S1202 There are other refurbs at Tiger or you can search Ebay. Wireless is handy for travel as you can sip coffee at Starbucks and access your e-mail. http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/Category/category_tlc.asp?CatId=17

If you want something small and reasonably competent something like this might be appropriate with the 256Mb additional RAM for $100: http://www.winbook.com/store/personalize_step2.phtml?PkgId=x_705855
