I can't seem to set up an email client on my computer.
I've been using yahoo! but I want to have everything
on my own hard disk. I've tried setting up the Netscape
client and Pegasus recently but they just don't function.
Is there a good source of general information about email
technicalities on the web so I can just study it and figure
    it out for myself?

Yahoo doesn't provide pop3 access. So you will not be able to directly setup an account.

However, you can do so using YahooPops. Go to http://yahoopops.sourceforge.net/

Actually that looks quite helpful and I might do it.
I didn't state my problem clearly though. I want to
stop using Yahoo! and setup and use another service
using maybe Pegasus or Eudora or Netscape but I
have not been able to set up an account using that
software. I don't know what's wrong but it could be
a lot of things so it's difficult to ask a specific question.
That's why I think it would be better to just get a
general education in email technology. Actually if
all else fails I might try yahoopops. The trouble is
I tried it once before a while back on a different computer
and it didn't work and I had computer problems after that
which seem to have been related to trying to install it.

Okay. Give me your email address in a private message. I will mail you the relevant portion of FAQ that I had written for a site. It contains general information about 3 types of email addresses (forwarding, POP3 and Webmail) and also contains a table giving differences between POP3 and Webmail in a bit more detail. That may be useful to you. :)
