Hi everyone,

Just a simple question. I was wondering what anyones opinion is on leaving your computer on all the time or turning it off.
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to each and everyone of you.

Danboy,

Good question......That is sure to be a continued debate here.
I only turn this thing off when I'm going away like overnight or out of town etc. ....otherwise it lives it's life ON most of the time outside of a daily reboot in the AM, for a back up and refresh resources.

I used to turn it on and off, on and off and eventually it got an attitute about shutdown hangs (98se) and I said fine I'll show you to cop an attitude with me ON you stay now....how do you like it now? It won't talk back, however it knows I meant business coz it's been purrrrring like a kitty.

I've read both arguements and both have merit on one side they say that the on, off, on off, thingy will take down the whole thing faster because hot, cold, hot, cold wears and tears on everything from expansion and contraction etc.

The other side says if it's ON all the time and cooling fan goes south you may not know it or be there to notice so that is valid as well.

I leave it on all day but I shut down at night. The only exception is during a storm with lightening even with a surge protector I just prefer to be safe.

I used to leave my pc up at work only to come back to a locked up machine, so just forget it.

Let me see - office, on all the time. Windows 2000.
Home - on all the time, Windows XP.

No problems with either. When i had windows 98 i had to reboot a lot and just shut down at night.

Laptop - obviously i shut this down whenever I'm not using it. (hibernate, actually). Also Win2000.

A many sided coin you have flipped! :)

Here are some past dicussions on the subject:

Here's one

Here's another

I recall another thread on the board but couldn't find it.

I leave mine on except when weather threatens or am away for the weekend, but restart at least once a day or two.

I'm kinda like DS in that mine wont shut down w/o forcing it.
I do turn-off the monitor to save electricity and the "bulb".
(I kinda wish the lightening would take "it" out sometime. Then I'd be rid of HP & WINME and get a good computer.

My 1/2 cent worth...

I shut mine down every day. If I am going to not be using it for 3 hours I shut it down also.

PC just runs better if it been on a long time and your memory is leaking on you and your resources get low.

I do restart mine quite often, (In fact it restarts when I shut down).

I used to leave mine on all the time, but it would lock up eventually. Now i just turn it on once a day. I think the days of 'chip creep' are long gone. ;)

Hiya

At work we leave ours on all the time, but I try to get in the habit of shutting them down on a Friday night.

But home is different. lately, we have been getting powercuts, so I turn it off at night all the time.

I know that 2000 is pretty stable, in fact stable enough to leave on in standby. Its just a force of habit, I suppose. The only time I don't is when I'm downloading through the night.

Hi Everyone,

Thanks for all the opinions that you sent. I can see it is a subject with alot of possible answers. Leaving it on and the fan going out with the possibility of fire does not sound like much fun to me. So I think I will start shutting it down at night.

AZ, they are still standing....froze....at the bottom of the hill........
just two statues.

Dark Star, after reading your reply, my computer is scared of you too! LOL

Does it restart on it's own when you shut down or did you forget to check the right box?

I know I have gone and shut down and the PC restarts on my new PC. But it's because 98 keeps what you last checked when 95 always defaulted back tro the shutdown. Plus I stopped using the Standby years ago because of bugs.

I've heard that theoretically, its better to leave it on because its the contraction and expansion of the thing heating up, then cooling down that causes failures. So its better theoretically to leave it on (and we are talking about the computer, not the monitor).

That fact notwithstaning, I turn mine off every night when I go to bed. I have this fear that a spark will fly out of it somehow igniting the entire house while I sleep. I'd rather have peace of mind and replace whatever burns out from turning it on and off every day :)

I usually just leave mine on because I'm to lazy to turn it off.

According to System Information heres my Current Info:

Microsoft Windows 98 4.10.2222 A
Upgrade using Full OEM CD /SrcDir=C:\WIN98 /IQ /U:xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
IE 5 5.50.4807.2300
Uptime: 4:02:48:40
Normal mode
On "SPEEDY" as "Todd Histed"

AuthenticAMD AMD Athlon(tm) processor
512MB RAM
47% system resources free
Windows-managed swap file on drive C (15230MB free)
Available space on drive C: 15230MB of 21968MB (FAT32)
Available space on drive D: 4573MB of 7312MB (FAT32)

System resources are starting to get a little low so guess I'll shut her down tonight.
