Yes this has been answered before (in 2001, I think) but the solution as provided via Rollin' Rog:
    REGEDIT4

    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{EFA24E64-B078-11d0-89E4-00C04FC9E26E}]
    @="Explorer Band"

    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{EFA24E64-B078-11d0-89E4-00C04FC9E26E}\InProcServer32]
    @="C:\\WINDOWS\\SYSTEM\\SHDOCVW.DLL""ThreadingModel"="Apartment"

    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{EFA24E64-B078-11d0-89E4-00C04FC9E26E}\Implemented
    Categories]

    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{EFA24E64-B078-11d0-89E4-00C04FC9E26E}\Implemented
    Categories\{00021493-0000-0000-C000-000000000046}]

failed to work. Maybe because IE is version 6?

The symptoms are the same - blank, b'ground-coloured left pane. The above was entered (I also tried 'shdocvw.dll' but no dice.

    Any further possible solutions, please?

    Thanks, Cybertech.
Alas this is the thread I got the quoted regfile from! Actually, it worked, I think: although no instant change was seen after the registry mod and restart, a second restart seems to have done the trick!

The non-starting Add/Remove Programs is definitely not improved.
I ran the Win2000 CD in repair mode, the AV is bang uptodate, Spybot has been run but no joy. On being clicked, the cursor changes to half-eggtimer for a second and reverts to an arrow

    Any ideas, anyone**
